Who can apply for the 2026 NextGen Summer Internship Program?

The program is open to CNMI high school and NMC students interested in gaining hands-on and real world experience in areas such as agriculture, aquaculture, media, nutrition and health, and other CREES-related programs. Students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or U.S. permanent residents and are at least 16 years old for Saipan applicants, 15 years old and above for Rota and Tinian students by the start date of the internship are eligible to apply. We recognize that applicants may also have dual citizenship status (Example: U.S. citizen & Palau citizen).

I’m an F-1 student, am I able to apply?

At this time, the internship program is open to U.S. Citizens, U.S. Nationals, and U.S. Permanent Residents.

Is the NextGen Summer Internship paid?

Yes! The NextGen Summer Internship is a paid internship program. Interns must meet eligibility and attendance requirements in order to be paid.

When does the internship take place?

Internship sessions will run from June–July 2026. Internship schedules vary by program area. Please refer to our Internship Opportunities List for more details.

How do I apply?

Applications must be submitted through our online application form during the official application period from May 25 – June 3, 2026.

What should I include in my application?

Participants should complete all required sections of the application form and provide accurate contact information and program preferences. Upon selection, proof of U.S. citizenship, U.S. permanent residence, or U.S. national status (Passport, Birth Certificate, or Permanent Resident Card/Green Card) and CNMI residency (Student ID, Mayor’s Office ID, or Driver’s License) will be required.

Can I choose which program area I want to intern in?

Yes, applicants may indicate their first and second choice program areas, though placement will depend on availability and application review results. Please refer to our Internship Opportunities List for more details about each program area.

How are interns selected?

Applications are reviewed based on eligibility, completeness, and program fit by internship program leads.

Will I receive a certificate after completing the internship?

Yes, interns who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion.

What kind of activities will interns do?

This varies by program area. Interns can expect hands-on learning experiences, team projects, field activities, media production opportunities, leadership development, and community engagement.

When will applicants be notified if they were selected?

Applicants will receive selection or non-selection notifications on June 5, 2026, after the review period through email or direct communication from a CREES team member.

Is transportation provided?

Interns are responsible for their own transportation to and from their assigned internship site. There is a virtual internship opportunity that requires only one in-person meeting per week.
