Students from the Tasi-to-Table organization visited the Northern Marianas College – Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services’ Aquaculture and Natural Resources Facility on Dec. 3, 2022.

The Girls Scouts learned how to make nutritious snacks thanks to Ashley Sikayun of Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension, and Education Services who also explained the benefits of healthy eating.

OPEN Ocean Aquaculture is an emerging approach to raise fish in open ocean waters utilizing submersible cages or net pens. Hawaii has been successfully operating commercial open ocean aquaculture cages in the U.S. In this natural, high energy environment fish grow better and are healthier. Open Ocean Aquaculture reverses the stereo-typical approach to providing for fish protein from “hunting” for fish to “farming fish”.

(NMC) — As part of Northern Marianas College’s efforts to promote economic diversification and workforce development, its Cooperative Research, Extension, and Education Services-Aquaculture and Natural Resources Program secured a $536,000 grant to construct mangrove crab (Scylla serrata) farming demonstration units on the islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.
